The Smallest Gallery in Soho presents ‘Brickflats’

The Smallest Gallery in Soho presents a new installation by London/ Barcelona based artist Brickflats.

Recycling over a tonne of waste in using 500 low carbon sustainable bricks (by Kenoteq), the artist implanted their ten ‘brickflats’ into a wall to project their view of the worldwide housing situation, where overinflated prices have given most people making a standard living no real options to buy or at times rent.
These little brickflats with their inhabitants are handcrafted stories that play on the global housing market. The design of the flats always makes sure that the inhabitants are fairly uncomfortable with the size of their housing.
While the situations depicted always have a sombre undertone – the  brickflats’ colours, design and the fact it looks like a toy also intend to make finding a brickflat in the urban wild a fun moment of discovery.

Two monolith brick blocks placed at an angle with a passage between them create a sense of depth, whilst at the same time space beyond disappears in a hazy atmosphere. Highly architectural in its conception, lighting approach supports the installation composition evoking the sense of passing through an urban setting. The brickflats then pop out of the wall, precisely illuminated in various ways depending on their position and theme. Some are spot lit from the front. Others benefited from uplighting from gallery floor level with the light bouncing back from the miniature flats’ ceilings onto the scene. Some have been illuminated from within, aiming the light from above through the brick openings into the brickflat’s interior.

Brickflats started in March 2021, Stoke Newington, London and has since expanded to 8 different countries. A miniature real estate project that aims to claim a monopoly over all housing in its market niche. The niches in crumbling brick-walls.

November 2023 – January 2024 at 62 Dean Street, London W1D 4QF.
